Windsor man builds table a week in 2015, posts all to Instagram
A Windsor, Ont., man who spent 2015 building one table per week finished his quest New Year's Eve.
Every week last year, Matt Cator built a new table, be it a coffee table, end table, dining table of even a table designed for a single cup of coffee, from scratch.
He posted a picture of every finished table to his Instagram account, @52tables.
Cator posted his final piece New Year's Eve. He described it as "a rolling ball sculpture under glass." It features a roller coaster for a one-inch ball bearing.
You can see a video post of the table in action here.
"I feel like a kid on the last day of school," Cator told CBC Windsor Morning host Tony Doucette on Monday.
Cator is a craftsman and artist who builds hairpin table legs for a living.
Hairpin table legs are made from metal and have a retro look. They can turn regular objects into unique pieces of furniture.
Cator said he came up with the idea of the 52-table project after finding someone who crafted 52 spoons in a year and posted the results on Instagram.
Cator said he has no regrets about taking on the challenge and sticking it out, but admits it wasn't an easy project.
"It was tough. Some weeks were tougher than others. It was a lot of work," he said. "I tried to keep it different every week and outdo myself every time. Fifty-two designs is a lot for a year."
Cator used bowling pins, street signs, trees and more to create his 52 tables.
"The materials chose me most of the time. I'd wander around the shop and the garage and just wait for something to jump out at me and ask me to turn it into a table," he said.
Despite handcrafting 52 tables in 52 weeks, he doesn't have a favourite.
"It's like picking favourite kid. Some of them, I'm not very happy with," he said.
He's not sure what's next for him — or the tables.
"I'm going to get them all out of my living for a while. Other than that, I have no big plans at the moment," he said. I'm not planning on selling them just yet."
