The Windsor Spitfires have filed bid documents to host the 2014 Memorial Cup at the WFCU Centre.

Mayor Eddie Francis says the city is supporting the bid. Windsor last played host in 1981.

I can honestly say, this is one we really, really want. And it's one we've been really working hard at achieving, just for the simple fact to say, 'thank you,' to the fans for their years of support," Francis said.

Windsor's biggest rival, the London Knights, also wants to host the 2014 Memorial Cup, the Canadian Junior Hockey League's championship tournament.

"What happens now is the committee will be short-listing the cities, and sometime in April, the cities that have expressed an interest and have made a shor tlist will be notified and provided an opportunity to present, as we did last time," Francis said.

Windsor came up short in its bid for the 2011 event. Mississauga won that bid.

The 2014 winning city will be announced in May.
