West Nile virus has been found in Windsor-Essex for the first time in 2017.

A mosquito pool has tested positive for the virus, according to the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit. So far there have been no human cases of West Nile, which can cause a fatal neurological disease.

Residents are warned to get rid of any standing water and to protect themselves using the following steps:

  • Use insect repellent that contain DEET
  • Ensure doors and window screens are free of holes and gaps
  • Limit time spent outdoors at dawn and dusk
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants in light colours when outdoors
