Ontario's Ministry of Natural Resources says the coyote population in Windsor-Essex remains high.

A dead, skinned coyote was found on Windsor's west side Monday.

A dog walker made the discovery at approximately 1:45 p.m.

Windsor Police responded to an area near Ironwood Drive and Cherry Blossom Drive, and found the carcass off the roadway, behind a concrete barricade traffic barrier.

Police called the Humane Society, which took the carcass and conducted an necropsy. That's when it was determined to have been a coyote.

According to a preliminary necropsy , the animal was skinned and likely died of a gunshot wound.

Melanie Coulter, executive director of the Windsor and Essex County Humane Society, said this is not a rare occurrence.

"We do receive calls on a fairly regular basis on similar situations. Hunters and anyone engaged in this type of activity need to remember that they are required to dispose of any remains properly and leaving them where a child could come across them is certainly highly inappropriate," she said. "There are regulations about disposing of remains of hunted animals."

Coulter said the front paws and an ear were missing from the animal.

Police believe that the coyote was skinned at another location and dumped.

Last week, CBC News was first to report that Windsor-Essex has such an abundance of coyotes, that Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island promote "predator hunting" of coyotes on its website.

Last year, Windsor police found a wayward coyote in the foyer of a downtown Windsor business.
