Homeowners in Sudbury, Ont., woke up to see their vehicle being driven away overnight, but police quickly caught up with the alleged thieves at the drive-thru of a nearby McDonald’s restaurant.

Greater Sudbury Police say they received a call at 1:20 a.m. on Sunday, about a reported break-and-enter that woke the homeowners, who saw someone making off with their vehicle.

Police say the thieves also had in their possession alcohol, cash, jewelry, electronics and an iPhone belonging to the residents. The total value of these items, including the vehicle, was more than $40,000.

But police say they were able to track the vehicle's location using a tracking feature built into the stolen iPhone and promptly caught up with the alleged thieves at the McDonald’s restaurant on Regent Street.

“The vehicle was blocked in as a result of police vehicles on scene and by virtue of being in a drive-thru,” police said in a release issued Sunday.

An 18-year-old male and a 19-year-old male now face break-and-enter, theft and possession of stolen property charges.

While police say the stolen property has been returned to the homeowners who reported the break-and-enter, officers also found other property that belongs to someone else. They want to hear from anyone whose vehicle was broken into overnight.
