Essex County Council has thrown its support behind people trying to revive the local harness racing industry.
Horse racing supporters are trying to convince the Ontario Racing Commission to approve 10 days of racing in Leamington this year.
They eventually want to apply for approval to build a new track in Lakeshore.
Supporters say there is at least $4 million — and maybe as much as $7 million — in purse money available It was left behind when Windsor Raceway closed last year.
Paul Branton, a veterinarian, spoke at the county council meeting:
"These funds are not tax dollars, government loans or grants. They aren't stealing dollars from healthcare. It's cash that's in deposit with Ontario Lottery and the gaming commission," he said.
Leamington Mayor John Paterson is supporting the local harness racing people:
"Since Day 1, I think the majority of people have jumped on board right off the bat," he said. "Some have learned more about their own municipality and finding about how many horse people work, live and play in their areas and how valuable they really are."
Supporters say there are 2,000 job on the line.
The organizers say reviving the horse racing industry would be a boost to the local economy and tourism.
