Firefighters in Tecumseh have rescued a cat, not from a tree, but from a burning house.

Officials said unattended cooking is blamed for the fire.

No one was hurt after the fire erupted at a home at 197 Arlington Rd, which caused heavy smoke damage throughout the house.

An off-duty firefighter lives next door. She called 911 and ensured the person inside got out safely.

The family cat was treated with a special oxygen mask designed for pets, which was donated to the department by the Tecumseh Animal Hospital.

Fire chief Doug Pitre said the device has been used about five times and is a good investment.

Pitre said the device costs about $150 and would be a great addition to every fire department.
