New Chinese seniors space fills void in Windsor

A new Chinese seniors space has opened in Windsor as a gathering place to break down language barriers and fill a void in the community.
Saturday marks the official opening of The Evergreen Centre, which will offer assistance, social programming and information sessions for Chinese seniors over the age of 55.
Katherine Chan is one of the board members and said her own experiences as a senior led her to get involved.
"I'm already 70 years old. I have my own problems," said Chan. "I want somebody to help me, that's why I want to help somebody too, that's the reason why I want to join the centre."
Chan said the language barrier often leaves Chinese seniors isolated from the rest of the community, but this centre provides programs in Cantonese, Mandarin and English.
Stephen Tsui is the president of the Essex County Chinese Canadian Association. Tsui said the centre organizes monthly meetings to discuss issues of concern for seniors.
"The next monthly get together will be March 23. There will be a topic on emergency medicines," said Tsui. "Immediately after the presentation there will be a roundtable discussion to see if people have any questions regarding use of emergency medical services in the city."
The centre, located at 1420 Tecumseh Rd. E., received funding from the federal government's New Horizons for Seniors program.
