OPP disappointed by impaired driving rates over holidays
More charges laid this holiday season than each of past 8 years, OPP say

Ontario Provincial Police laid more impaired driving charges this holiday season than it has for each of the past eight years.
"We had hoped to see these numbers decrease significantly during this year's campaign, in light of how much harder we have worked to educate the public about the dangers of drinking and driving," said OPP Commissioner Chris Lewis.
"Impaired driving continues to be the leading cause of criminal death in Canada and it is disappointing that we still have Ontario drivers who feel entitled to place other road users at risk of losing their lives to an impaired driver."
This year's holiday campaign lasted from Nov. 24 to Jan. 2.
During that time, 693 people were charged with having a blood-alcohol level of more than 0.08. And on top of that, 625 people received warning suspensions for blood-alcohol levels of between 0.05 and 0.08.
Last year, 682 people were charged with impaired driving and 583 people got warning suspensions.
