After purchasing the old Grace Hospital Friday for $2.3 million, the City of Windsor also has its sights set on the Art Gallery of Windsor.

A report going before city council on Dec. 3 recommends the purchase.

The city would pay $2.5 million for the building, then lease back the top two floors to the gallery for $1 per year.

Under the proposed arrangement, the AGW would no longer get an annual grant of $450,000.

Coun. Fulvio Valentinis represents the downtown area and said the move would take some pressure off of the art gallery.

"We're trying to establish so that the art gallery can concentrate on its programming, preserving its collection and showing it and attracting visitors to it," said Valentinis. "And by the city having responsibility for the building, in the long run is going to ensure some of that sustainability for the art gallery, which is very, very critical and important."

A consultant has recommended the community museum move into the building.

A proposal to move the Windsor Public Library's main branch to the art gallery also remains on the table.
