Opposition to Bill 115 is picking up steam in Windsor. CUPE rallied its local members Thursday night to fight for collective bargaining rights and stand behind teachers.

Local teachers plan to protest Bill 115 outside Finance Minister Dwight Duncan's Windsor office on Friday.

Fred Hahn is travelling the province bringing a message of solidarity to CUPE members in an effort to fight Bill 115. CUPE represents public-sector workers.

The bill gives the government the power to stop strikes and lockouts and impose its own agreements.

In addition, local CUPE members are concerned about contracting out maintenance and custodial work at the University of Windsor.

Hahn said employers should beware that outsourcing does not always mean cheaper and reliable service.

"It is a short-term solution that employers have used because they think it saves them money, but in the end, and there are many studies not just from our union that demonstrate that contracting out doesn't save you money," said Hahn. "It can create huge headaches and there is a lack of transparency and accountability that comes with it."

Hahn said he remains optimistic that a fair deal can be reached by both parties.

"We have, in Ontario, over 2,000 collective agreements," said Hahn. "And 99.9 per cent of the time they're bargained good agreements that work for the workers and work for the employer and we have every reason to believe that can happen here in Windsor."

CUPE is also in negotiations with the inside and outside workers at Windsor City Hall.

The city has already filed for conciliation in negotiations with the inside employees.

Three years ago city workers went on strike for more than 100 days.
