Windsor does not rank among the leaders on a list of Canada's most entrepreneurial cities.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business rated Windsor No. 72 out of 103 cities that were surveyed.

Ted Mallett wrote the study, and said when small and medium businesses grow, it benefits the entire community.

"Not everybody has to own their own business or be an entrepreneur, but if you have enough of them, then you are creating more job opportunities for people to then develop and grow," said Mallett.

Local government was the strongest category for Windsor, he said, but the city scored low in new business development.

"The lower scores that we're finding in Windsor have to do with business optimism, and this is a problem we've seen in southern Ontario in general," said Mallett. "Local businesses are not as optimistic as they had been in past years."

Windsor has relied on big businesses for too long, Mallett said, and the city needs to focus on attracting small and medium-sized employers.

Windsor ranked one spot above Ottawa on the list, but more than 20 places behind London.

Grande Prairie, Alta. claims the No. 1 spot, Chatham-Kent ranks No. 63 and Sarnia is ranked last at No. 103.
