20 Windsor pharmacists apply to give flu shots

Approximately 20 pharmacists in Windsor-Essex have applied to administer the flu vaccine.
Flu vaccination is one new service pharmacists can provide now that the province has expanded their role.
Pharmacists will be able to start giving flu shots when this season's campaign begins Oct. 22. Pharmacies will be paid $7.50 for each flu shot they give.
Tim Brady, president of the Essex County Pharmacists Association, said the move makes sense.
"We've always been rated as the most accessible health-care practitioners," Brady said, referencing an Ipsos Reid poll. "So it kind of made sense in a lot of these [changes] especially with the flu shots.That way it allows better accessibility and hopefully more people will get the shot also "
In addition to flu shots, pharmacists will now be able to renew or adapt existing prescriptions.
"I think all of us have been in circumstances where we would have much preferred to be able to just go to the pharmacist, get that prescription renewed, than have to make an appointment to go back to see the doctor," Health Minister Deb Matthews said Tuesday after meeting with pharmacy students at the University of Toronto.
There's no agreement on how pharmacists will be paid for their increased role in health-care delivery.
