Drivers may be thrown for a loop after the Windsor area's first two-lane roundabout opens at the end of the month.

It's part of the Windsor-Essex Parkway project.

The traffic circle will connect County Road 9, currently the Howard Avenue diversion, with Highway 3 and Highway 401.

"Initially, while approaching the multi-lane roundabout, it may seem overwhelming," said Dennis Regan, a senior project manager with the Ministry of Transportation. "But what drivers need to remember is when navigating the roundabout, it's no different than navigating a traditional intersection."

Regan hopes Thursday's public meeting will let drivers wrap their mind around how to safely use a multi-lane roundabout.

People are invited to the Macedonian Community Centre on Howard Avenue between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Officials will answer questions and offer two presentations.

Regan said it may seem intimidating, but it's fairly simple.

"If you want to make a right turn, you use the right lane. If you want to make a left turn, you use a left lane," said Regan. "You can stay in either lane if you want to proceed straight through."

Regan said there are a few other multi-lane roundabouts in Ontario.

"People are probably most familiar with the multi-lane roundabouts from the Kitchener-Waterloo area, where there are several down through there," said Regan.

The ministry is considering many other two-lane roundabouts across the province.

Officials are putting the finishing touches on Windsor's two-lane roundabout. After signs are installed and asphalt is set, Regan said the contractor plans to have it open by the end of October.
