A seven-week-old puppy is dead after a domestic dispute in Chatham.

Police said a 25-year-old man threw the animal down a stairwell, picked it up and then threw it to the ground again.

His girlfriend and several onlookers tried to rescue the animal but it was dead by the time police arrived.

"She tried to prevent the accused from grabbing the dog again, but sadly he pushed her down and again threw the young puppy," said Chatham-Kent Police inspector Tim Mifflin.

Police said it happened Saturday morning on Louella Crescent.

"In my experience I would say that it is unusual to have this type of violence inflicted on an animal during a domestic dispute," said Mifflin. "It's absolutely awful to hit a spouse. It is just incredulous to do that to a defenceless animal."

Mifflin said the accused faces charges of killing an animal, domestic assault and uttering threats.

Police said the man's girlfriend suffered minor injuries.
