Brightly-coloured bikers are set to swarm the streets of Windsor on Saturday. The groups is part of an awareness event for motorcycle safety.

It's called "Can You See Me Now" and bikers will wear green and orange shirts with that slogan emblazoned on their backs.

Co-organizer George Winney said the biker community wants to take a stand amid what's been a deadly motorcycle season.

"We're hoping that the drivers see us — and they will see us. It'll kind of stick in their head and be a reminder to them to focus a little more on what's going on around them, instead of what they're doing in their car," said Winney.

Winney said he often hears excuses as to why cars slam into motorbikes.

"I didn't see them. That seems to be the excuse that's going around. We ride with our lights on, we make a bit more noise than most vehicles and we find it hard to understand that people can't see us," said Winney.

The ride starts Saturday at 11 a.m. at Anderson Funeral Home on Ouellette Avenue.

As CBC News reported July 27, statistics provided by the Windsor Police Service show there were 30 collisions involving motorcycles through July 25 this year. There were 38 such collisions in all of 2011.

This year is shaping up to be the worst since 2008, when there were 44 collisions, 16 of them were injury collisions and one of them fatal. There have been two fatalities in Windsor this year.
