Ontario joins international fight against Asian carp

Ontario is joining a Canada-U.S. committee that's working to prevent the introduction of Asian carp into the Great Lakes.
The species is a risk to native fish populations because it eats the food supply and crowds other species out of their habitat.
Natural Resources Minister Michael Gravelle said Asian carp poses economic, social and environmental threats to Ontario.
"We've got our best and our brightest involved in this committee, and we're pleased to join it, and we hope to do good work to keep Asian Carp out of the Great Lakes," Gravelle said.
Since 2010, enforcement officers have seized almost 40,000 pounds of Asian carp that were destined for Ontario markets.
Provincial law prohibits the buying and selling of the fish.
