It is expected council on Tuesday will approve the proposed site plan for Schlegel Villages new long-term care home on the campus of St. Clair College.

There have been delays but it now appears that all barriers have been removed so that the new 256-bed facility can be built.

A few nearby homeowners had objected to the project — some cited the building would create too much shade. Schlegel has met with them and tried to take care of their concerns by making changes to the design plan.

Solutions to other potential problems include the fact trees will be moved, a fence with gates will be erected, as will a new hedge.

James Schlegel, the CEO of Schlegel Villages, said construction should start before the end of summer. He expects the $35-million project to be finished by early 2014.

Coun. Fulvio Valentinis said he and residents are anxiously waiting for that day.

"There's just a dire shortage here and it really backs up our system," he said.

Another issue council will deal with at its meeting is to formally approve issuing a request for proposals for the outsourcing of the city's internal audit functions. It's something council first agreed to do at a meeting last month.
