The first aircraft to use Premier Aviation's $23-million hangar at Windsor Airport will arrive in mid-September, company CEO Ronnie Di Bartolo told CBC News on Friday.

Di Bartolo said the maintenance department will start its repairs at the city-owned hangar on September 18, three days after the plane is scheduled to arrive.

Initially, 37 workers will work on the aircraft.

Di Bartolo said staffing levels will reach 200 in the first two years of operation. By the Premier’s seventh year in Windsor, officials say 300 will be employed there.

More than 600 people attended Premier Aviation's job fair in March in Windsor.

Just weeks prior to the job fair, aircraft maintenance firm Aveos ceased operations. The business employed approximately 2,600 people servicing mainly Air Canada planes.

Earlier this year, city officials and staff of Premier Aviation promised the airplane maintenance company would be up and running in the 143,000-square-foot facility by mid-year.

Final tweaks made to the $23-million hanger have delayed that opening.

Di Bartolo said clients are eagerly waiting for the hangar to open in Windsor and expects good business thanks to the airport’s close proximity to the U.S. border.

Meanwhile, St. Clair College is waiting for Premier to "define needs" before the school can take off and establish an aviation training program.
