Golden Glove Boxing champ and radio broadcaster Spider Jones spoke to young people Wednesday at the kick off event for the Summer Jobs for Youth Program.

Jones told the crowd at the St. Clair College Centre for the Arts about getting out of jail at the age of 26 and knowing he wanted to change his life

"I had one goal ... I would never go back to jail," he said.

The youth participating in the Summer Jobs for youth Program live in some of the city's most troubled areas. The program will give 265 young people a chance to earn money, experience and scholarships.

Jones was born in Windsor, raised in Detroit and had a poverty-stricken violent, upbringing.

"If I had a program like this when I was young, I would have had a better shot," Jones said.

Jones got an opportunity to work and stay at a boxing gym in Toronto. At the age of 30, he went back to school to chase his childhood dream of becoming a radio personality. It's a dream that he has since fulfilled.

"I love working. I love radio. I love it," he said.
