In an attempt to beat the heat and keep their cool, roofers in Windsor are starting their days at the earliest possible time.

Patricia Sasseville owns Unique Roofing. Her crew starts at 6 a.m., the very minute the city’s bylaw allows for construction to begin.

“Customers don’t like it. Normally, we start around 8 a.m.,” she said. “It’s usually hot by 8 a.m.”

Windsor has experienced six consecutive days of temperatures above 30 C. Tuesday’s predicted high is 32 C and the city is under a smog and humidex advisory.

“It’s almost unbearable, but we all have to eat, right?” said roofer Fernando Munoz, who works for Sasseville.

Sasseville said the heat affects her and her crew physically and mentally.

“We get edgy with each other. The heat gets to your brain. Temperatures rise outside and temperatures rise with each other,” she said.

“The littlest thing sets you off,” Munoz said.

Hats, water and breaks are in ambundance on Sasseville's work sites.

While the heat is constant, the same can’t be said for the rain.

“It’s hard for us. Sometimes they say there’s a 40 per cent chance [of rain] and it rains and sometimes they say 80 per cent and it doesn’t,” Sasseville said.

Tuesday, her crew worked until about 8 a.m. That’s when a downpour forced them off the roof they were working on in South Windsor.

They were going to try again later in the afternoon.
