The National Basketball League of Canada on Thursday announced that Windsor's expansion bid has been approved for the 2012-2013 season.

After reviewing the Windsor’s ownership group’s application, NBL Canada’s board of directors voted unanimously to bring professional basketball to Windsor.

“I’m truly excited for the City of Windsor being awarded a new professional basketball organization”, NBL Canada president and CEO, Andre Levingston said in a media release. “I know the owners and players will do a tremendous job of supporting the community along with serving as role models for the youth of Windsor. I’m confident the city will embrace this amazing opportunity and support their club."

League spokesperson Anthony Bennett said the season begins in late October or early November. He couldn't say which venue in Windsor would house the new team.

The team has yet to be named. Bennett said the franchise or league may hold a competition to name the team.

The Windsor owners have not been publicly identified.

Other cities that expressed an interest in a team were St. Catharines, Ottawa, Kitchener, Mississauga.

Only Mississauga was still in the running for a team.

There are currently seven teams in the league. They are: Halifax Rainmen, London Lightning, Moncton Miracles, Oshawa Power, Quebec Kebs, Saint John Mill Rats and Summerside Storm.
