Jim Chambers, who lives near the site, says he fears the facility will cast large shadows over his backyard and the parking lot will be too close to his property. (Courtesy Schlegel Villages)Residents in south Windsor will have to wait up to six weeks before they know whether the $35-million Schlegel Villages long-term care facility on St. Clair college property can proceed.
The chair of the Ontario Municipal Board hearing needs time to rule on whether to permit the rezoning of the property on Talbot Road West.
Jim Chambers lives near the the college and said privacy and lost trees are among his issues with the project.
An OMB hearing began Tuesday to address the concerns of two neighbours.
"You can't turn around without the greening of America the greening of Canada and yet at the same time we wind up having all our greenery removed and having three trees perhaps put in the place of what now is a nice little grouping of trees behind our place," Chambers said.
Schlegel Villages president James Schlegel said changes have been made to the plan to accommodate the residents' concerns.
"In all of our other sites we're, in fact, described as a very good neighbour and we've worked hard to try to engage the neighbours in dialogue throughout this process. I understand not everyone of the neighbours is satisfied with the outcome," Schlegel said.
He fears the facility will cast large shadows over his backyard and the parking lot will be too close to his property, but said there may be a simple solution.
"As a matter of fact I think my wife and I would both be happy with the situation as given if there was no parking on our side of the buildings," Chambers said.
Walter Pizzolitto, the brother of former Windsor-West MPP Sandra Pupatello is the other objector.
Schlegel said his company will continue to work with neighbouring residents.
The OMB chair will make a decision in 4-6 weeks.
