The new owner of the Grace Hospital site says it will be four to six weeks before work can resume on the property. The Ministry of Labour issued a stop work order after asbestos was found at the site. (CBC)It may be four to six weeks before work on the Grace Hospital site can resume, says one of the site owners.
Tuesday was the deadline for the owners to submit a plan to the Ministry of Labour on how they were to deal with asbestos on the site.
Tony Battaglia of Westpark Developments said once the work to clean up the asbestos on the site is done, a consultant must come in and create a special report.
"Right now we'll submit our proposal to the Ministry [of Labour]. I don't know how long it will take for them to approve it," said Battaglia. "Then it will be a matter of getting consultants to complete a designated substance report.
Once the final report is accepted by the ministry, the work on the building will only take a couple of weeks to complete, Battaglia said.
In the meantime, no work can proceed on the site. Last week the Ministry issued a stop work order on the project until an asbestos plan was in place.
"At this time — right now — the stop work order is still in effect," said a ministry spokesperson Tuesday. "The Ministry is continuing discussions with the owner."
The city of Windsor wants the Grace Hospital building demolished. But Lee Anne Doyle, the city's chief building official, said Tuesday that the city is in a holding pattern until they hear from the Ministry of Labour.
