The late Louis Odette has left the City of Windsor a gift.
The estate of the businessman and philanthropist has left the city $250,000 for the sculpture garden on the waterfront. Odette and his family have donated several sculptures and pieces of art to the city over the years.
Odette died last year at the age of 88.
The conditions of the latest bequest include the spending of $50,000 annually for the next five years on advertising and promoting the sculpture park. As well, the city must spend $25,000 to sponsor bus tours to the sculpture park.
One other condition is that the city must match the $250,000 gift. Council has already approved that request.
Mayor Eddie Francis said the money will help grow the sculpture garden.
He said he's been in discussions with the city's CAO and chair of the international relations committee to build upon a sculpture symposium held in Windsor's sister city, Changchun, China.
Councillor Bill Marra said the gift can only help make the park more of a tourist draw.
"Mr. Louis Odette and his family they've been absolute supporters of our waterfront and really what's evolved into a world-class - certainly a nationally known - sculpture garden on our waterfront," he said. "This is a nice problem to have."
