The province is looking into whether Navistar International Truck has breached any funding agreements with the province, after deciding to close its Chatham, Ont., plant.
On Tuesday the company announced it was permanently closing the truck plant, which has sat idle for more than two years.
Pat Hoy, the MPP for the area, said the government's legal department is looking at funding agreements in the interest of Ontario taxpayers.
Several years ago Navistar received about $60 million from the federal and provincial governments to continue operations in Chatham. The Canadian Auto Workers Union also made concessions to keep the plant open.
"If the company is found to breach any of our funding agreement we'll recover those funds," said Hoy.
The CAW will be negotiating a closure agreement with the company. Hoy, who worked for Navistar when he was younger, said the province will monitor the talks.
"We want to make sure that employees get their rightful benefits and their pay entitlements under the law," Hoy said.
At its peak the Navistar plant employed more than 2,000 workers, according to the CAW.
