(Courtesy of Jenna Brimner)Eight female students in Windsor, Ont., served a one-day suspension on Tuesday for wearing costumes made of duct tape to a high school hockey game in December.
The homemade outfits were banned by the St. Joseph's high school principal because of previous complaints from parents that students were showing too much skin.
The students said the cheerful costumes made of blue and yellow duct tape are a tradition at the annual sporting event, and so they decided to wear them despite being told not to by school administration.
The girls told CBC News on Tuesday that they watched most of the game, and were approached in the last five minutes by staff, who informed them that they would face disciplinary action.
The students were told Monday they would have to serve the suspension.
Mike Seguin, assistant superintendent for the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board, said that despite the fact that the outfits weren't as risqué as they have been in the past, the students broke the rules and had to be punished.
In this picture from 2007, St. Joseph's High School students are seen wearing duct-tape outfits showing more skin than in 2010. Parental complaints prompted school officials to ban the outfits altogether. (CBC News)
