Michael Dorner has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the 2009 death of Edmund Summers in Windsor, Ont.
Dorner will only serve seven years and two months of his sentence because he has been held in custody since his arrest in June 2009.
Dorner, 33, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the beating death of Summers, who was found naked in a downtown alleyway.
Summers, 44, was asleep in this house in June 2009 when Dorner arrived, kicked him, and dragged him outside.
The two men knew each other and both were drunk but the judge said the victim was unable to defend himself.
Dorner was charged with second degree murder but pleaded guilty to manslaughter two days into a preliminary hearing.
In court Friday, Summer's brother read an emotional victim impact statement to the court.
At times, he went off-script, pointed at Dorner and spoke of the range of emotions he'd been going through. Dorner looked at him throughout the statement.
The defence is satisfied with the sentence.
"The evidence supported a pretty brutal beating and that just simply isn't going to go away — never went away — and this is how we feel the case was going to go in any event," said defence lawyer Frank Miller.
Before Dorner was taken away a sobbing relative whispered "love you."
In a cruel twist of fate this is not the first time the Summers family has dealt with tragedy.
Another brother was killed the same way in Detroit ten years ago.
