Negotiations with the province's 9,000 community college teachers have broken off and no new talks are expected.
The Ontario Public Service Employees Union says that leaves it no choice but to plan for a Jan. 13 strike vote.
"For the second time in two weeks our bargaining team came forward with significant modifications to our position only to be met with management's refusal to negotiate in good faith," said Warren [Smokey] Thomas, president of OPSEU.
The union represents faculty at 24 community colleges across the province.
Thomas said in a release the union had tabled modifications to its bargaining position but college negotiators insisted the union withdraw 69 demands.
A spokesperson for the colleges said taking a strike vote won't change the situation.
"A strike mandate will not change the fundamental reality, which is that a deal has to be affordable and practical. A strike mandate will not give the colleges more money or flexibility to reach a settlement," said Rachael Donovan who chairs the bargaining team for the colleges.
