Dr. Allen Heimann told CBC News he did not know if the man had received the H1N1 vaccine, or if he suffered from a pre-existing medical condition.

The man died earlier in the week at Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital, said Heimann, who heads the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit.

The unidentified man is the third to die of swine flu in Windsor and Essex County since April. The other men, aged 55 and 56, had pre-existing medical conditions.

There have been "significant increases in the number of confirmed cases" of H1N1 in the last several weeks, Heimann said Friday.

As of Nov. 10, there were 160 suspected cases of H1N1 in the region. There were also 134 confirmed cases, more than twice the number in mid-October, Heimann said.

"The virus is out there," Heimann said. "Therefore it is still important for individuals to be immunized."
