Vaccination against the H1N1 pandemic flu virus begins Monday in Windsor and Essex County.
Health-care professionals will be first in line, according to Windsor-Essex County Health Unit medical officer Dr. Allen Heimann.
Members of the public will be able to get the vaccine starting Tuesday.
Vaccinations are available to those who "live, work or go to school in Ontario," Heimann said, with a focus on those people 65 years old or younger who have chronic health problems, pregnant women and healthy children between the ages of six months and five years, among others. People 30 years old or younger without chronic health problems are also a priority.
"Certainly individuals who are a bit older, we are not going to turn them away," Heimann said.
Nineteen vaccination clinics will be held at locations across the city and county until Nov. 30.
"We do anticipate these clinics will be well-attended," said Deb Bennett, the unit's director of health promotion. "We will have additional resources there so that we can meet the demands."
There have been 59 confirmed cases of swine flu in the region in 2009, Heimann said.
