Zersenay Tadese of Eritrea won his third consecutive World Half Marathon title on Sunday in Birmingham, England.

His time of 59 minutes and 35 seconds on the 21.1-kilometre road course broke the previous championship record he had shared by 21 seconds.

The Eritrean pulled away from the pack around the 10-km point and held on, finishing 24 seconds ahead of runner-up Bernard Kipyego of Kenya. American Dathan Ritzenhein was third.

Matt Loiselle of Windsor, Ont., ran 1:04:59, for 55th place.

Kenya's Mary Keitany won the women's half-marathon, completing the course in 1:06:36.

Fellow countrywoman Philes Ongori took second place and was over a minute behind. Ethiopia's Aberu Kebede finished in third.
