The massive amount of dirt produced by the construction of an access road to a new Windsor-Detroit crossing should be dumped in a regional landfill and not sold privately, the head of the Essex-Windsor Solid Waste Authority said Wednesday.
The Windsor-Essex Parkway will include a six-lane freeway, four-lane service road network and 11 tunnels. Building it will mean displacing "a substantial amount of dirt," said Tom Burton, chairman of the authority's board of directors.
Burton said the dirt, about one million cubic metres, could help cap Landfill 3, a 101-hectare landfill in the township of Maidstone that services the City of Windsor and many parts of Essex County.
The dirt is also "another source of revenue that's badly needed in a time where we're facing major deficit," Burton said.
The regional landfill receives tipping fees per tonne. The authority estimates it lost $1.3 million when 15,000 tonnes of refuse were not delivered to it during a 14½-week strike by Windsor's municipal workers.
