Transit Windsor and its union began contract talks on Wednesday night in the hopes of reaching a deal to prevent a labour disruption.

The current contract expires at the end of September.

So far, talks between Transit Windsor and the Amalgamated Transit Union, which represents about 225 bus drivers and maintenance workers, have been peaceful.

Windsor city Coun. Caroline Postma, chair of Transit Windsor's board of directors, doesn't expect "any major problems."

"I wouldn't expect a settlement right away, but I would hope, with all the meeting dates that they have set, by the end there's a settlement," said Postma. "I really don't think that we're headed for a work stoppage, and I really think that any issues can be resolved."

The two sides have scheduled a series of meetings over the next few weeks.
