A single punch has left a LaSalle, Ont., man in critical condition in hospital after a fight in downtown Windsor.
Police said the 28-year-old was assaulted around 3:30 a.m. Sunday on Ouellette Avenue near University Avenue.
'We've had probably 10 over the last two years of this similar type of incident, some more serious than others, but certainly the potential for disaster.'—Staff Sgt. Norm Burkoski
Police said the man was punched once in the head and the blow knocked him over and he hit his head on the concrete.
He was rushed to hospital where he had emergency surgery for a critical brain injury, but police said he is expected to survive.
The incident happened just after closing time at the many bars and clubs in the downtown core where police say serious fights are becoming commonplace.
"It is very frustrating for us," said Staff Sgt. Norm Burkoski.
"We've had probably 10 over the last two years of this similar type of incident, some more serious than others, but certainly the potential for disaster. It is a very serious situation."
Witnesses helped police identify the alleged attacker Sunday morning.
Officers arrested a 27-year-old London man, who is expected to appear in court Monday on charges of assault.
