Public library users will no longer be able to watch pornography on Windsor branch computers.

Library Chairman and City Councillor Al Maghnieh has ordered libraries to block pornographic material on library computers.

Barry Holmes, the Chief Executive Officer at the library, said it's a complicated issue — balancing the rights of individuals to access information with the community's right to have a safe place to go.

Maghnieh said he has received complaints about people watching porn at the library.

"This is a public library for families, for seniors, for people to progress and be creative and advance literacy," Maghnieh said. "That's what tax dollars will continue to go to. I don't know why the last number of boards and administrations have allowed this to happen over the years but this board has taken swift action."

Councillor Maghnieh was not worried about legal challenges. He said if the matter becomes the subject of a challenge then the board will seek legal advice.

"We will adopt a new software protocol as well as firewalls and anything that has the specific words related to pornography or references to it will be blocked from the network," he said.
