LaSalle police have identified Nick Monforton as the teen killed in a single-vehicle crash on Monty Street Thursday.

The 19-year-old was travelling between Malden Road and Matchette Road when his truck left the street and hit a light pole.

Monforton was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, according to Const. Harbinder Gill.

"He was born and raised here and leaves a big family and friend circle behind, unfortunately, who are obviously devastated by the loss," Gill said.

Trisztan Horvath grew up playing hockey with Monforton and described the teen as outgoing and full of love for those around him.

"He loved nothing more than to be with his friends and ... his father," said Horvath. "Everyone loved Nick."

The teen was the third young man from the tight-knit hockey community in LaSalle to die this year, according to Sandra Pearce Werner, who described the losses as "way too much tragedy."

"Nick was loved deeply by his family and friends and we are all just so sad and all leaning on each other at this time," she added.

Police believe speed was a factor in the crash. Gill said the teen was not wearing a seat belt.

"Any young life always has a great deal of promise and when we lose it, it really hurts everybody," said Gill.
