Police in Windsor, Ont., have identified the driver killed when his car crashed into a parked Jeep and two trees on Wednesday morning.

Police said Varun Manku, 20, of Windsor, was speeding southbound on Victoria Avenue around 1 a.m.

Manku's 2007 red Grand Prix hit a parked Jeep, and careened across the intersection of Victoria and Ellis Street, driving over the front lawns of several homes.

The car struck a tree, then spun before partially wrapping around a second tree.

Excessive speed and alcohol were both factors in the crash, said police, adding that Manku was alone in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

People living in the area heard the car hit the trees, and tried to help.

"It was an awful sound," said Clayton Loiselle, who lives nearby.

"We run out, and a neighbour and I tried to get the door open to get him out or to see if he was alive. He was breathing and he had a pulse but it was very, very weak."

Loiselle said an ambulance arrived about four minutes later and took Manku to hospital, where he later died.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or saw Manku in the hours before to contact them.
