Pierre Street fire 'deliberately set,' police say

Windsor police are investigating an arson in Via Italia, where a mattress was set on fire and caused $40,000 in damage.

Windsor police are investigating an arson in Via Italia.

Fire broke out Tuesday night in a multi-unit apartment building on Pierre Street at Erie Street East.

Windsor police acting staff Sgt. Chris Dupuis says police believe the fire was deliberately set. 

"Fire[fighters] went inside and found a mattress that was set on fire [and] located in a vacant unit in this building," Dupuis said. "They were able to put this fire out. Windsor police  investigators attended ... and determined this fire to be deliberately set."

The unit, one of four in the building, was vacant and all other tenants in the building escaped, unharmed.

Damage is estimated at 40-thousand-dollars.

Anyone with information is asked to call Windsor police or Crime Stoppers.
