Phony hydro callers threaten to cut off service, police warn

Amherstburg police is warning the public of a scam involving phone calls from phony hydro or power companies threatening to cut people off if they don't make a payment.

Amherstburg police is warning the public of a scam involving phone calls from phony hydro or power companies threatening to cut service to customers if they don't make a payment. 

Police said the caller identifies themselves as an employee of a company, threatens the homeowner and attempts to get their financial information. 

Officers have identified the number most calls are coming from as: 1-877-205-9771. 

If anyone receives this type of call police are warning people not to give out their personal information. 

Anyone who has information or has fallen victim to this scam is asked to contact Amherstburg police at 519-736-3622 or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Center at 1-888-495-8501.
