The province is giving St. Clair College a large chunk of the money it needs to build a new fitness facility.

MPPs Dwight Duncan and Sandra Pupatello announced $7.9 million to help with construction on the College's new HealthPlex on Monday. College President John Strasser said construction was to begin on the main campus in Windsor next April.

The grant has Strasser grinning.

"When you got $7.9 million, that's half of what it's going to cost — that's critical," Strasser said. "It allows us to do that and plan for it and get it done now."

The building will include a 20,500-square-foot gym, an indoor track, and classrooms to house health and safety-related programs including border services, paramedics, police foundations and pre-service firefighters.

Windsor West MPP Sandra Pupatello said the city is primed for a new academic reputation.

"It really is about making our post-secondary a destination point to come from all over because they'll know they come here, they have the services right in their own back yard," said Pupatello.

The HealthPlex will double the capacity of its current gym facility, and include an 11,000-square-foot weight and fitness area.
