An OHL referee from Windsor is being investigated by the league following comments he posted to Twitter on Friday night.
Joe Monette worked the Windsor Spitfire and Soo Greyhounds game on Friday. He then posted offensive comments to Twitter.
A twitter profile for @MONZY25 says it is Monette's. The profile and tweets are no longer available to the public, but CBC used topsy.com to search Monette's tweets.
"Soo Saint Marie, two words, Slim Pickens," wrote Monette. He then added the following hashtags: "#noteeth #hicktown #allfaties".
The OHL then decided to re-assign Monette for the Saturday night game between the Greyhounds and Spitfires.
Conrad Hache is the Director of Officiating for the league. He said there is a social media policy for "...everyone involved with" the OHL.
"It wasn't meant to be the way it was," Hache said of Monette's tweet. "But as I stated earlier, once you put it on social media it can go out like wildfire."
Hache went on to say that putting comments on social media sites is just like publishing them in a newspaper "or on a news broadcast".
Possible discipline for Monette could include suspensions or a fine, said Hache.
