Council is expected to make a decision this year on whether to renovate the existing City Hall or build a new one.
The current one was built in the 1950s. It's full of asbestos, which was a common material used at the time. The cost to renovate is an estimated $15 million.
Helga Reidel, the city's chief administrative officer, said a study is being prepared for council. It will outline the possibility of building a new city hall, which will also be shared with tenants.
"Staff has been meeting every other week, updating each other on various components of that review and that report," Reidel said. "We were also asked by council to seek out potential tenants."
Coun. Fulvio Valentinis said this issue has dragged on for quite a while. He thinks it's time for council to decide what to do.
"City Hall is going to need some major, major investments, especially the heating, mechanical, air ventilation systems," Valentinis warned. "There's significant money to be spent there."
A decision could be made during budget sessions in March.
