A group people involved in the local horse racing industry will later provide an update on their efforts to revive the horse racing industry in Windsor-Essex.
Local members of the harness horse association want more races at the Leamington track this year and next, with a new track eventually being built in Lakeshore.
Leamington town councillor Rick Atkin said a news conference is planned for Thursday at the Leamington Fairgrounds.
"If we lose standardbred racing in this community, the actual effect is going to be very dominant on a number of people in the agricultural community," Atkin said. "We have horsemen that are going to lose their stock. We have breeding farms that are going to go under. We have people that raise grain that really have a supply of hay and straw for members in the racing industry. So the trickle-down effect is going to be there."
Members of the industry claim trouble began when the province announced last year the end to sharing slot machine revenues with the industry.
