LaSalle's fire department will get a new search and rescue boat.

Town council approved the purchase at a cost of $75,000.

More pieces of equipment for the department will also be purchased for another $20,000.

Fire chief Dave Sutton said the current search and rescue boat has been around since 1989.

"This is just a scheduled replacement, although it's a couple of years later than originally scheduled, but we've got a couple years of service life extended out of the current boat," Sutton said. "We're just replacing and continuing, so the same level of service will continue with the new vessel."

Sutton expects to have the new boat in the water by the end of April.

The old one will be put up for sale.
