Jason Coffey pleaded guilty to second degree murder Tuesday in Superior Court today.
Coffey stabbed his 63-year-old mother, Florence Coffey, in her home on Oak Street last July.
Court heard Tuesday she had at least 40 stab wounds.
Coffey was originally charged with first degree murder.
Coffey's lawyer, Andrew Bradie, said his client feels horrible about what he did and pleaded guilty to protect his family from further pain.
"He accepted responsibility for what had happened and the matter was remanded to September 4th for sentence. There is a mandatory life sentence that follows a conviction on second degree murder," Bradie said.
A judge will decide in September how long he must spend in jail before he is eligible for parole.
