The human remains found on a residential property in Dresden, Ont., on Wednesday are the subject of a homicide investigation, local police said.
The owner of the property found the remains while renovating a deck at his house on Sydenham Street. Dresden is part of the municipality of Chatham-Kent about 100 kilometres northeast of Windsor.
When he removed some boards, he found an old, abandoned well.
"When he looked down in the well, he saw what appeared to be skeletal remains," said Const. Michael Pearce of the Chatham-Kent Police Service.
The homeowner called police, who sent a forensic identification officer to the house.
Pearce said he did not know how old the house is or how long the owner has lived there.
Police had secured the scene Wednesday afternoon as they awaited the arrival of a forensic anthropologist from the University of Western Ontario in London.
