The first heat alert of 2013 has been issued in Windsor.

If you're outside today, Dr. Allen Heimann, the Windsor-Essex medical officer of health, issued a Level 1 alert.

Heimann says heat can have deadly consequences. He encouraged people to drink plenty of water and limit physical activity.

"If people don't take it easy and rehydrate themselves, they can get into problems with what is called heat stroke. That's when individuals are overcome with heat  illness," Heimann said. "They have decreased perspiration. They begin to lose consciousness. Their body temperatures begins to rise significantly. That's a potentially life-threatening  illness."

Humidex values are expected to reach 40 or higher for the next three days.
