Windsor city council is giving residents more time to purchase hard-sided garbage containers.

Council members say the new policy will take effect July 1 instead of March 1 as originally planned.

Council has also approved spending up to $50,000 on a campaign to educate residents about the upcoming changes.

Coun. Jo-Anne Gignac says it's a good step to take.

"It seems realistic to me that we undertake the campaign, make sure that we inform people of what type of containers can be used. which ones will be picked up and move forward that way," Gignac said.

When the changes go into effect, it would mean that garbage bags would have to be placed in containers with lids to be picked-up.
