A former immigration consultant in the Windsor area is facing numerous fraud charges after leading people to believe he was assisting them in the process of getting into Canada.

Francesco Salvatore (Sam) Burgio, 45, of Amherstburg, Ont., is accused of taking money from potential immigrants and not submitting their applications.

RCMP said 10 victims used the consultant's services by submitting fees and other payments ranging from $2,000 to $100,000.

Immigration consultants require a formal licence to practice, but Burgio's licence was revoked for undisclosed reasons in 2006.

Burgio is charged with two counts of fraud over $5,000 and nine counts of fraud under $5,000.
